Bin Missing Or Corrupt

Apr 19, 2015 - isolinux.bin missing or corrupt Reboot and Select proper Boot device. My Live USB is not corrupt because I can boot it on my Desktop.

I would like to put Debian on them.I have downloaded: debian-8.7.1-i386-xfce-CD-1.isoWhen I put the ISO on a CD-R, it boots correctly. When I put the ISO on a USB flash drive and boot it: isolinux.bin missing or corruptThe same USB flash drive boots correctly in newer computers.Memtest86+ 5.01 on a USB flash drive boots correctly in the oldercomputers. My conclusion is that the ISO is not compatible with the BIOS in theolder computers.ACK, that sounds most likely from what you're describing. Beinghonest, there's not much we'll be able to do about that directly I'mafraid.

I am very much aware that maintainers of Linux distributions want to keep distributing only ISO images and they want to support only the 'simple' dd method, in spite of the fact that for the most part optical media is not being used for these purposes anymore. At the same time that distro maintainers want to 'simplify' their workload, The Syslinux Project keeps ignoring the matter.

Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2017 21:02:27 +0100 Hi,David Christensen confirmed that above fixed MBR enabled isohybridbooting on his legacy system.Time for a summary of findings.-How to reproduce the bug:Any BIOS which does not announce 'Device Access using the packet structure'by the reply to INT 13 AH 41 will fail to boot by the old MBR, if the numbersfor heads/cylinder and for sectors/head do not happen to be identical. The drive geometry numbers are handed out by the BIOS on INT 13 AH 8depending on its perception of the drive. I never saw both being the same.See also:-How to work around:Overwrite the old MBR by the fixed one.wgetiso=debian-8.7.1-i386-xfce-CD-1.isooriso=/dev/sdcdd conv=notrunc bs=1 count=432 if=isohdpfx.bin.170324 of='$iso'According tothe fix should apply to ISOLINUX versions since 3.82.The most recent touching of the code part in question was on 2009-05-31.-Proposals for debian-cd and syslinux package:Martin Str mberg has announced thatwill exist only a limited time. (I have a copy.)I propose that Debian gets it too and offers it for download togetherwith a description what problem it might fix and how to apply it.If it gets a Debian URL and if i get pointed to an empty wiki page,i would volunteer to write the description.Next, one will have to decide whether to use the fixed MBR with futureDebian ISOs and whether to put the patch into Debian's syslinux sourcepackage. We got no comment by hpa yet. Any review by a skilled assemblerprogrammer is welcome. Especially one will have to check for anyinadverted side effects caused by changing the stack push sequenceto the expectations of isolinux.bin.-Have a nice day:)Thomas.

The first weekly testing images will beavailable earliest in two weeks time (since I've set the testingmigration to 10 days and assuming no new RC bugs are discovered duringthat period). After that we still need to decide whether we also want to fix this forthe next point release. Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2017 17:41:35 +0100 Hi,syslinux has been upgraded in both stretch and jessie in theirrespective recent point release (9.3 and 8.10) to address the issue.Buster/sid also have a fixed syslinux version since mid October.I've just confirmed that the fix is present in the most recent 'netinst'CDs for stretch 1 and jessie 2 (using the snippet provided by ThomasSchmitt). And any newly created CDs should no longer suffer fron thisissue. Therefore I'm closing the bug. Thanks everyone for debugging, fixing and testing!RegardsLukas12.
